The problem of how to effectively deal with dog bites plagues Wisconsin cities across the state.

One Wisconsin city about 170 miles east of La Crosse is now considering a ban on pit bulls and other "dangerous animals" in order to reduce incidents of dog bites, a media outlet is reports.

Fond du Lac is the latest city to ponder a pit bull ban; as always, backers of the ban expect to have a real fight on their hands.

A city councilman there plans to introduce the ordinance that would add new restrictions on current owners of pit bulls and ban the issuance of any new licenses for pit bulls.

"If you have a pit bull now, you're not going to have to give your pit bull up," the councilman said. "If there are any new pit bulls -- a female with a litter of pups -- after 12 weeks, those pups would not be allowed to be in Fond du Lac."

The law would not allow people moving into Fond du Lac to bring pit bulls with them and it would not allow city residents to adopt the species from the local Humane Society.

The second part of the councilman's proposal bans city residents from owning or possessing animals that have poisonous bites, including primates, foxes, skunks, exotic cats and so on.

The councilman said his proposal stems from research of reported dog bites in Fond du Lac over the past five years. Pit bulls were responsible for 10 percent of the bites back in 2007, but last year that percentage had grown to a full third of all bites.

"The numbers speak volumes," he said. "We need to seriously look at this."

After a dog bite injury, victims should contact an experienced attorney who can protect their rights and help them get just compensation for their injuries, medical bills and other damages.
