Last summer, an 11-year-old boy had his ears bitten off when he was attacked by a vicious dog. Now the boy far from us in La Crosse has suffered another tremendous loss, this time losing his mother to a battle with Lupus.
The Tennessee boy's mom died at the age of 30 after a five-month battle with her illness.
Last August, the Cocke County boy was attacked by dogs; it took the boy's father a half-hour to free his son from one of the dogs, a pit bull mix.
Cocke County is just east of Nashville.
The boy's father said he's "tore all to piece" over the loss of his wife and his son's mother.
The boy is apparently making progress in his rehabilitation efforts, according to a local TV station.
In addition to the loss of his ears, the boy's left arm was badly damaged in the attack.
The father said his son has regained about 90 percent of the use of his left hand.
He said his son will likely have prosthetics to replace his ears. Because of the tremendous scar tissue, it's apparently impossible for doctors to reconstruct ears.
And what of the couple that owned the dog that tore the ears from the boy? They recently received two years of probation. If they meet the terms of the probation, their records will be wiped clean, prosecutors said.
The father said he strongly disagreed with the judge's ruling that would allow the pair's records to be expunged.
His son's long road of difficult medical procedures and rehabilitation is by no means going to come to an end soon.
"This kid's got to deal with this for the rest of his life," he said.
In many similar cases, the families will file a lawsuit against the dog owners, seeking compensation for not only the medical bills, but the physical and emotional damage as well.
